Historically black colleges and universities (hbcus) have historically provided a nurturing academic and social environment for african american students. Yet, a pervading homophobic climate exists on these campuses that adversely affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, andor questioning (lgbtq) students attending. While over 200 lgbtq centers exist on college campuses across the country, there is limited data about lgbtq students in higher education. Existing research shows that lgbtq students face challenges as early as high school that factor into their college enrollment and experiences. Whether youre a freshman, a graduate, or a 6th-year super senior, this list is for every gay guy whose experienced college in one-way or another. According to the postsecondary national policy institute, students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (lgbtq) make up an estimated 10 of the college population. While lgbtq students enjoy greater visibility, acceptance, and inclusion than ever before, there are still many policy issues and risk factors that directly impact lgbtq college students.
